A symbol of purity and innocence, the lamb appears repeatedly in religious contexts, its sacrifice being associated with that of Christ. In Exodus 12, God brought ten plagues upon Egypt. For the tenth plague, the Israelites were instructed to sacrifice a lamb and mark their doorposts with its blood so that the Angel of Death would distinguish them from the Egyptians. This event marks the origin of Easter.
